1/21/2023 0 Comments Writing FantasyFantasy: the heights of imagination. It dares you to not think outside the box but to smash it and create something new. You are starting from nothing and everything at the same time. New languages, new people groups, new purposes. You are providing rain to land in a drought. The paper is parched, and your brilliance has the opportunity to quench its thirst. It is not a simple task at all. Even though it's all made up, the story and background still have to make sense. As a child, I read fantasy books about fairies and people with magical powers. Now, I am dabbling in fantasy again to write a beautiful story. I familiarized myself with magic systems, conjured up various magical powers, and how to write spells. I made a PowerPoint presentation of magical powers with their strengths, weaknesses, and consequences. I included photos and personality types. It has been fun. Every story I work on is different than the last. Some stories take place in other countries. Most of my characters are adults, while some are kids or teens. They are even different genres. I write to learn about something new. I write about ideas that force me into research. They say to write what you know. I deliberately write what I don’t know. Some examples of that: Malagasy culture Southern Africa cultures Military terms Budding technology Reincarnation PTSD Modeling/fashion industry and more! Working on my urban fantasy story has made me feel like a kid reading about magic and fairies again. Before I let you go, please check out my Fiverr account! I write custom poems starting at $10! https://www.fiverr.com/writeabby Photo by Jay on Unsplash

Writing a short story sounds easier than writing a full-length novel, but for me it's not. A short story is no more than 10,000 words. There have been two or three times in my life where I decided to write a short story and it didn't work out. How do I write a story in 10,000 words? How is it possible that authors can limit their idea to 10,000 words? I outlined the urban fantasy story I’m working on now to be ten chapters, about 1,000 words each. I tried but somehow, I wrote closer to 2,000 words per chapter. Am I going to limit myself? Of course not, I don't have the ability to do that. My creative process is a tornado that goes wherever, picks up what it wants and puts down what it wants to put down. I love the ideas that I have for this story. I won’t remove it for the sake of making it into a short story. Are there scenes that I can take out and move out around? Oh, for sure. My story is at 19,495 words and I can see myself writing another 10,000 because I'm only a little bit over halfway. I love to write. I love to read. I love to create. It is the best gift that God has given me. Maybe I can’t stick to 10,000 words because I just wanna write and write and write.
Someday I will write a real short story using an old idea. I am hoping that my mind will not go out of bounds and give me more ideas. Maybe what I need to do is find a short story template and write my ideas into it. I need a more rigid structure. It is my writing goal to write a short story. Some people might wonder why it matters. Well, I like to challenge myself to do new things. I want to go outside of the box and know that I am capable achieving my goals. I self-published a book in high school to be more confident about my writing. I have completed three books. Though they need a lot of editing. I like to finish projects. I like to challenge myself. I like to achieve my goals and make more goals. This is what keeps life interesting. I don't want to play it safe. I don't want to stay in my lane. I don't want to do what I know. I want to learn and grow as a writer. I want to see improvement in my books. In the story I'm working on now, I see a huge shift. I completely outlined and did all my research before writing. I have a better handle on having distinct character voices. I used to get tripped up over who spoke even though I wrote it. That makes me happy. I have also written better descriptions though I still need a lot of work on there. I have gotten great advice on how to do that. I took a different approach to this story. I am consistently writing because I'm not stopping every sentence to research something or figure out the next scene. I already know what's going to happen next, who's going to be involved and why. I haven't had this much time to consistently write in years. It feels like I'm back in high school writing for hours upon hours on my computer. It’s amazing to feel like a writer again, and not just someone who writes. I hope to take you all on this journey me writing again. I hope one day all of you will read my projects.
